The 39th General Council of the United Church of Canada, the second largest Christian group in Canada after the Roman Catholics, has adopted an important statement on Christian-Muslim relations. The final version of the statement, entitled That We May Know Each Other, was adopted after a year of church-wide study of the initial draft.

The statement affirms that Muslims and Christians believe in the same God and share a common heritage through the prophet Abraham. It “acknowledges the prophetic witness of Muhammad, and that the mercy, compassion and justice of God are expressed in the Qur'an, which is regarded by Muslims as the Word of God.
