Muslim children to face music lesson ban as it is ‘forbidden in religion’

The Muslim Council of Britain says music lessons are potentially unacceptable to about ten per cent of Muslims.

That could mean hundreds of children are being withdrawn from lessons, the council said, because passages from a collection of the Prophet Muhammed’s teachings ban instruments.    »»» Metro.co.uk

The permissibility of music in Islam is a very controversial issue. However, as this article suggests, only a small minority forbid all instrumental music. They allow decent songs, which may be accompanied with drums. The larger consensus is expressed by Sheikh Qaradawi in The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam: “Among the entertainments which may comfort the soul, please the heart, and refresh the ear is singing. Islam permits singing under the condition that it not be in any way obscene or harmful to Islamic morals. There is no harm in its being accompanied by [instrumental] music which is not exciting [i.e., lascivious].”
