About Qalam

Calligrapher's hand and penQalam” is the modern Arabic word for pencil. It is also the word for the traditional reed pen that scribes and calligraphers have always used.

In Chapter 96 of the Qur’an (Islam’s holy book), God (Allah, in Arabic) commissions the Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) with words that can be translated as follows:

Proclaim in the name of your Lord and Cherisher who created,
Who created man out of a clot of congealed blood.
Proclaim! For your Lord is most generous,
He who taught the use of the pen (qalam)…
Taught man that which he knew not.
